McCain re-instate the draft?

Since McCain wants to keep a large military presence in the Mid East for the next 100 years and enlistments are declining due to cut backs in benefits. When do you think McCain will call for a military draft ? Do you think there will be deferments for rich kids ?

  1. It's not far-fetched to believe he will. After all, the U.S. Military is spread very, very thin and McCain wants war with Iran as wells as continuing war with Iraq and maybe do some warring in Afghanistan.

He might have said is against the draft but don't forget that he has already flip-flopped on whether or not he'd vow never to raise taxes. On one Sunday's "This Week" with that Stephanopoulis guy, he said "Nothing is off the table'. He was quickly slapped silly by tax-hating, tax-payer bailout/investment capital right-wingers.

McCain himself served in Vietnam because his number was called, that is, he was *drafted* so why is it so inconceivable that he wouldn't reinstate a draft since, if he gets elected even with his open support for more war in the Middle East, the American people basically gave him their blessings to do just that?

  2. McCain has specifically said that he is opposed to the draft.  So is just about everybody else.  You might be confusing McCain with Charlie Rangle.  Quite a feat on your part.

  3. You and Curious Cat are so funny. Maybe you better go back to drinking the kool-aide Obama is passing out. Curious Cat, McCain graduated from the Naval Academy, he was not drafted. I sure hope the kkol-aide works as well for you guys as it did for the people in Jonestown.

  4. The only man who even considered bringing back the draft was a democrat.

And our military prefers volunteer anyway, they dont want people who dont want to be there.

  5. Unless someone declares war on us you will not see a return of the draft.

The lessons learned from Vietnam era show that the only way a draft will be universally accepted by the American public is if there are NO deferments and No exceptions to military service.

  6. There is no need to reinstate the draft. We have figured out that we have a much better Army when it's filled with people who actually want to be there instead of having a bunch of people who were forced to be there. You get much better people with a volunteer army.

  7. There's no chance at all that McCain will reinstate the draft.  The all-volunteer military is a such higher quality force than the military of Vietnam that there's no going back to a traditional draft.  The demands of current and future warfare require very smart and very good soldiers.  It's hard to get that kind of quality when you dredge the barrel, so to speak.  In case of emergency there are enough of us vets floating around that could re-up.  In case of urgent manpower needs, a draft could be done but not in the old way - I would expect a draft where people could choose their area of national service.

  8. We've kept a military presence in Europe and Japan for 60 years and in Korea for over 50 years. They are not likely to be changed any time in the future so why the concern over a presence in the Gulf areas for the security of the region which is entirely in th US's interest? Enlistments ebb and flow throughout time. Re-enlistmernts are still occuring at a high rate though as most of the troops feel their presence over there is making a difference and are afraid that a too early withdrawal will leave veterans feeling like they did after Viet Nam, frustrated and losing comrades in vain. The draft can not be reinstituted by any one person, even the president. It would be political suicide to push for a return to a draft unless this country was directly attacked and the public could clearly see the need. The new military has become so sophisticated and needing higher education levels that lowering the overall capabilities of the military by bringing in less educated and less motivated personnel would be counterproductive. Even if a draft would be instituted under a President McCaiin, why would you think he would be for deferments for "rich" kids as he has had 3 sons who have served in the military? One was a Navy pilot just like his father, one just returned from serving in Iraq as an enlisted Marine and one is currently in the US Naval Academy. None were given any preferential treatment as evidenced by the one who just returned from Iraq. He was patrolling in the Anbar Province during his tour and not placed in a rear cushy position safe from harm. He has not used his influence to garner any favoritism for his sons and their military service. So he knows the sacrifice that families are going through.

  9. Obama is the saviour of our A$$.Admit it.

  10. I hear Canada is nice this time of year.
