The FC Twente boss has admitted that he was not experienced enough to replace Sven-Goran Eriksson to take the reins of the Three Lions, while insisting that Roy Hodgson has enough experience to cope with the pressure.
Steve McClaren, the current FC Twente Enschede head coach, has admitted that he was not experienced enough to take the reins of England national football team from Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2006.
After Eriksson left the managerial post at the Three Lions at the end of 2006 World Cup finals, the Football Association (FA) shortlisted the 51-year-old tactician along with Sam Allardyce, Martin O’ Neill, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-c4244 Curbishley and Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Scolari was offered the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 by the FA, but the Brazilian mentor turned down the opportunity to become England coach. The FA then announced the former Middlesbrough boss as the successor to Eriksson.
However, following the Three Lions’ failure to qualify for Euro 2008, the FA dismissed the English trainer from the managerial post.
And the 51-year-old has now admitted that he was not experienced enough at that moment to coach the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 national team.
“I think I wasn't experienced enough. It was too early for me. Inside was okay, the players were fine. I had worked with them for six or seven years as assistant anyway, so I knew them and I knew the environment, which is terrific at the FA. Keep me inside
that, no problem. It's the sideshow and I wasn't experienced enough to cope with it”, McClaren was quoted as saying to the Observer.
The English trainer, however, has expressed confidence in the abilities of Roy Hodgson, who was recently appointed as the Three Lions manager.
“I think Roy [Hodgson] is. He's been through the fire a few times and he knows how to handle that”, McClaren added.
The 51-year-old tactician, who has thus far failed to regain his reputation in England, is a hero in Enschede nonetheless, as he led http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Twente-c39233 to their only Eredivisie title in 2010.
And the Englishman has insisted that he will remain the Tukkers boss until the end of his contract even his club fails to perform.
“I think that no matter what - and it might end badly - you can't take away the first, probably the only championship, this club will ever win was in 2010 and I was the trainer”, McClaren concluded.
