McCourt Case hits a new twisting bump on the road
A judge ruled in favour of Jamie McCourt, recently, in a case that tested the ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball. The ruling read that the marital property agreement, between the McCourts, was not valid
and hence, unenforceable.
Jamie and Frank McCourt have been at each other’s throats for a long time. The two divorced recently and they are now engulfed in a messy court case. The McCourts are fighting over property and financial resources. The judicial
system has been tasked to see the matter come to a respectable solution. While many see the development invoking unrest at the Dodgers’ camp, analysts suspect that the team could suffer greatly if the ownership woes do not end soon.
The two McCourts have been contesting the ownership clause of the team and while opinions differ, the twisting act in the play dealt with a complicated fact that turned up recently. There were two written agreements signed and
duplicated in six total copies. They differed on the ownership clause as one document claimed Jamie and Frank as co-owners and the other claimed Frank to be the only owner.
Nevertheless, the ruling means the matter will have to go to the court for overseeing a decision on the ownership matter. Victoria Cook is a lawyer on Frank’s behalf and she believes Jamie is not entitled to the team. She said,
"We feel extremely confident the court will find Frank is the sole owner of the Dodgers. So what we're looking at now is the next phase of the case. And what that means for Frank is more time at the courthouse, but at the end of the day we're confident it'll
be favourable for Frank."
On the other hand, Jamie McCourt’s lawyer, Michael Kump, issued a statement on the ruling, saying, "We are very pleased that the marital property agreement has been invalidated. Now that Jamie has prevailed on this fundamental
issue, we hope that it will be possible to resolve this matter in a reasonable way going forward. The Dodgers are a valuable civic asset, and Dodger fans deserve stability in the front office, a winning team on the field, and a strong Dodger presence in the
community."
The Dodgers have been considerably playing the winter meetings, in the recent days and they will like to see the matter resolved peacefully, as soon as possible.
