McCullum gives the Kochi Tuskers a comfortable win against the Chennai Super Kings - IPL News
Second Innings Analysis
Rain had interrupted play during the first innings, which meant that the innings had to be restricted to 17 overs each. As the Kochi Tuskers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kerala-c803 took to the field to get the second
innings underway, they knew the game was theirs to lose and the Chennai Super Kings’ bowlers helped them in their instinct.
Brendon McCullum and Mahela Jayawardene opened the batting for the Kochi Tuskers as they faced the Chennai Super Kings’ opening bowling pair of Albie Morkel and Doug Bollinger.
Strong Start
The opening partnership got the Kochi Tuskers the start they were looking for, as the two batsmen combined 39 runs in four and a half overs before Jayawardene was the first player to be
dismissed in the second innings.
Top order heroics
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Parthiv-Patel-c2159 and Brendon McCullum then linked up to keep the momentum going. McCullum in particular was in fine form as the Kiwi batsman sent the ball to the ropes regularly. His three
sixes and four boundaries provided two things, entertainment for the crowd and a lower required run rate for them to chase.
It also added extra pressure on the bowlers, who were growing extremely desperate in their attempt to break the partnership.
McCullum was eventually dismissed just three runs short of his half century, yet he had left his side in a comfortable position at 90 runs in 10.3 overs.
Smooth sailing
Patel was back at the pavilion as well in the 13th over, but it was a little too late for the Super Kings, as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ravindra-c84236 Jadeja made quick work of the remaining
runs.
The Kochi Tuskers ended up reaching the required total with two overs to spare, thanks to their more aggressive run rate of nine runs per over.
Second Innings Batting
The batting performance of the Kochi Tuskers was more in line with what the T20 format is all about, as compared to their opponents on this occasion. The top order performed well, especially
McCullum and Patel, as both batsmen’s knocks helped set-up the easy victory.
In fact McCullum’s innings was eventually what allowed his side to finish with such ease. His 47 runs and the speed at which he scored, eased the pressure off the batsmen who were to follow.
Also the late blitz from Jadeja made the finish a lot less tense than the Super Kings would have hoped for, yet all around it was a solid performance from the Kochi Tuskers’ batsmen.
Second Innings Bowling
The bowling from the Super Kings mirrored that of the Kochi Tuskers in the sense that it lacked any real bite in terms of taking wickets. Only three of the Kochi Tuskers’ batsmen were
dismissed with two of the wickets credited to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ravichandran-Ashwin-c84208.
The issue however, was that the Super Kings could not restrict the run rate and the Kochi Tuskers took a toll, and it was this that made the difference.
Final Verdict
In the end the better team won. The Kochi Tuskers Kerala were better with both the ball and the bat than their Chennai opponents. Though they did not take as many wickets as they would
have liked, still they managed to slow the rate at which the Super Kings were scoring runs before batting with the aggression needed to win.
Brendon McCullum was awarded the Man of the Match award ahead of Suresh Raina and deservedly. So his knock was the one that led his side to the victory.
