Brendon McCullum’s double century against India has ensured New Zealand were able to force a draw in their second Test against India on the subcontinent.
The 29-year-old blended some of the creativity that makes him such a dangerous Twenty20 player with the patience and grit required in the five-day format to finish with 225 runs in the second innings, his highest Test score, after spending about nine hours at the crease, proving his move to opening batsman from his customary role as wicketkeeper-batsman may pay dividends for the Kiwis.
In the end McCullum, who had made just four in the Blackcaps’ first innings, was brought undone by a slower legbreak from Sreesanth, his attempt to drive it through the air landing in Suresh Raina’s hands at mid-on to leave New Zealand well placed at 431-7.
Declaring at tea on day five after their side had amassed 448-8, and with a 326-run lead, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, they have largely to thank for that fact.
Kane Williamson, who scored a century on his Test debut for the Blackcaps in the opening Test of the series, provided the most solid support for McCullum, the 20-year-old making 69 before Harbhajan Singh trapped him on his pads to end their century partnership.
In the end, India – who at least entertained with the bat despite their predicament - finished their innings on 68-0, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gautam-Gambhir-c58623 finishing on 14 not out.
The draw is a second positive result of the tour for Daniel Vettori’s team which have now drawn the first two matches of the three-Test series against the world’s No. 1 Test team and still have a chance to win the series in the final Test in Nagpur, which begins on November 20th.
