McDonalds marketing?

I was thinking about a recent study I had heard about how universal the McDonald's logo has become and how studies show that McDonald's is known by more than 83% of children before they reach schooling. Because McDonald's is a Universal Giant do you think that for one year McDonald's could completely eliminate their spending on advertising and still have the average yearly sales? I understand that seeing an advertisement makes people want to go to McDonald's and that their advertising is usually for new meals and stuff but for example: Let's say McDonald's spends 4 billion on worldwide advertising. If they were to spend 0 dollars and attract customers just by the fact that McDonald's is universally known and how much is already behind the name and lose 3 billion in sales, that's 1 billion extra dollars for them!

  1. no, because if you remind people of something enough it will make them more likely to buy it

  2. it's universally known because of their insane amount of advertising spent each year - it's what drives people to eat there, tells them what to get, convinces the kids to ask for it, etc.. because of that it also snowballs into more sales which means more people are attracted to the idea of opening up their own franchise, which then in turn adds to the yearly $$ spent on advertising as a whole, etc..

huge corporations like that use advertising as a vehicle to convey their desired attributes to the consumer (i.e. fun, energetic youths, family-oriented adults, skinny-health-minded eaters, etc..). You see the commercial, the people having fun using their products, and it might sway you in purchasing.... especially if your exposure to the competitors products are negative (that is also something advertising can accomplish - making your product look like the 'good choice' compared against any other).

To cut advertising would only mean other fast-food chains would quickly pick-up the slack, being able to position themselves as just about whatever they want (within their legal limits of course). People would be swayed by new product offerings and other promotions geared at driving traffic away from McDonalds, which in turn would slowly eat at their sales, which eventually would cause franchises to close (and/or change brands to a fast food chain that is more profitable), etc...

  3. Once you lose sales, it is very difficult to regain them.  McDonald's knows how to advertise, so they actually make more money by advertising then they would by your method of not advertising.

  4. lol, smart!
