McGladrey Classic – a look back at round one
The penultimate event of the Fall Series is underway and already there are some surprising performances.
McGladrey Classic is not only the last chance for the players to earn some money to retain their card for the PGA tour, but a victory at the Seaside course will also land in an opportunity to play at the WGC-HSBC Champions in China.
There have been surprise leaders at the top as the sun dawned on Thursday. Bud Cauley and Marco Dawson both shot an eight-under 62 to lead the tournament.
For Marco a victory is a must if he has to retain his tour card for the next season. As far as Cauley is concerned, he sits pretty comfortably in the money tour list.
However, Cauley is still searching for his maiden win on the tour and this might prove to be a lucky week for the world number 55.
"Obviously, I've thought about winning every tournament I've teed up in this year," Cauley said. "It's been a long year, and although I've played a lot this year, I haven't won".
He added, "It's still a goal of mine, but I'm not thinking about that while I'm out there, or putting any more pressure on myself this week. The season is kind of wining down. It would be great to win here".
Davis Love III seems to have found a remedy for the Ryder Cup loss at the hands of the Europeans. This is his third start since the Ryder Cup ended.
At the McGladrey Classic, Love is right in contention for the title. He shot a decent round of five-under 65 and trailed the leaderboard by three shots.
Love is yet to win on the tour this season. A few more rounds like this and the Ryder Cup captain might be holding his first trophy of the season.
The Englishman, Greg Owen is tied with Davis Love III after he too shot an excellent round of five-under 65. Just like many others on the field, Owen is also searching for his maiden win on the tour.
Jonas Blixt’s good run of form came to an end, as he carded two-over on Thursday.
