McIlroy and Bjorn share lead after the second round in Dubai – Golf News
The world number two Rory McIlroy and Thomas Bjorn both finished by scoring a 13-under par overall after the second round of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic on Friday, February 10, 2012, to share the first position on the leaderboard.
McIlroy entered the second round with a two-stroke deficit to the overnight leader, Rafael Cabrera-Bello, and charged to the top position while adding 65 to his opening 66.
He carded a total of seven birdies in a bogey-free round at the immaculate Emirates Golf Club.
However, he said at the end of the round that he could have managed to record a better score if he had not missed the eagle putt on 18th and a birdie shot on the first hole he played.
The Emirates Golf Club is the same course that witnessed McIlroy clinch his first ever European Tour victory in the 2009 Dubai Desert Classic.
Therefore, McIlroy is now aiming to register another win where he has performed tremendously in the past four years.
Bjorn, who joined McIlroy later in the evening with a similar bogey free round of 65, said that patience was the key for his spectacular performance on the first two days.
"There is a tricky spell on this golf course, six through nine, and that can really come up and bite you," said Bjorn, "so you have got to keep your patience because the back nine offers a lot of opportunities".
Cabrera-Bello carded a three-under par 69 to slip to the second position after mixing five birdies with two bogeys. He had a 12-under par overall score.
Martin Kaymer, Scott Jamieson and Grégory Bourdy were a shot behind to finish tied for the third place.
The highlight of Kaymer’s round on the second day of the event was his ace on the par–three seventh, which earned him a watch from the sponsors of the tournament.
However, he gave it to his physio as they had a bet on it. "It will be a good celebration tonight," he said.
This was also Kaymer’s first ever hole-in-one in his professional career. Overall, he made four birdies and an ace against a single bogey on the par-three fourth.
