McIlroy receives Shot of the Year award for his stunning six-iron stroke at the 2011 US Open
The year 2011 was the most successful season for Rory McIlroy. His win on the US Open brought many honours for him and now he has been awarded the European Tour Shot of the Year accolade for the year 2011. His fans voted and supported him for the award.
In the 2011 US Open, the 22-year-old Irish professional golfer made a superb six-iron shot on the 10th green hole, at the Congressional Country Club, which was selected as the best shot of the year.
He took a tee stroke over water and the ball reached near the hole, only a few inches away. McIlroy cheered up his fans and they were happy to see the best swing stroke from him.
"I thought that shot was probably the most important in the round because Ye Yang had just stuck it in there close," McIlroy said. "To follow that up with mine was pretty cool".
He added, "I had a big lead, but there was always the chance that if I had hit it in the water or done something silly and Ye had made his birdie then it would have put a bit of pressure on me".
McIlroy faced massive pressure from Ye Yang on the 10th hole. Both players scored birdies, but his overall performance and the impressive 10th green stroke helped McIlroy gain a huge lead.
The voting for the award was conducted by the European Tour. McIlroy and Miguel Angel Jimenez were the most favourite nominations.
Jimenez was nominated for the 250-yard putt on the 17th hole, at the Valderrama, in the Andalucia Masters.
However, McIlroy’s putt was more appealing than Jimenez’s. McIlroy achieved 30% votes, whereas Jimenez received only 21%, making the young Irishman entitled to the award.
The current season has just started. Giving players awards in the first month of the year develops more interest and motivation for the golfers to perform better than before.
"Hopefully I can produce a few more of those in 2012," McIlroy said.
McIlroy is committed to golf and wants to make another memorable year like 2011. His passion and dominance will make him the world leader soon.
