McKayla Maroney plans for 2012 Olympics after striking Gold in 2011 World Championships, Tokyo
McKayla Maroney has not let the glory of a gold win transform into complacency. She has even bigger stars in her eyes as she focuses on achieving more.
At 15-years, Maroney is one of the youngest artistic gymnasts. Two years into the sport she has already proven that she is the queen of the vault.
While her skill and potential extends to include all events of the sport, her consistently clean form on the Amanar is definitely her piece de resistance, sometimes overshadowing her diversity.
Maroney brought out the big guns in the 2011 World Gymnastics Championships held in Tokyo this October.
Her impeccable form on her Amanar (15.8) and her Podkopayeva (14.8) earned her third gold medal in the vault. She averaged a winning 15.3 on her vaults.
The 2011 World Gymnastics Championships results were to decide which teams deserve spots in the 2012 Championships to be held in London, whereby the top eight teams would make the cut.
With the Olympic year of 2012 on the horizon, Maroney has geared up to hone her skills further.
"For the next couple of months, I'll just be training at my gym," said Maroney. "No (U.S. training) camps or competitions for a little bit. So it's a good time for me to perfect my skills".
Coaches Galina Marinova and Artur Akopyan will be helping the gymnast in perfecting her skills, as well as in upgrading her acts.
Maroney revealed that she plans on upgrading at least one of her vaults for the 2012 Olympic year. In fact, she has already started working on one.
She hopes to complete Cheng (round-off, half-on, layout Rudi), her new vault, “as soon as possible”, showing the world some of the same self-assured spirit that she accredits her success to, so far.
"For every competition, I just went in there with confidence in myself and in my team, and each day it felt like I gained more and more experience," she said.
In the World Gymnastics Championships 2011, McKayla’s vaults included an Amanar, which is a Yurchenko-entry vault, followed by two and a half twists in the air during a laid-out back salto, followed by a round-off, half-on, layout barani.
It is good to know that Olympic pressure has not completely robbed the athlete from her childhood, she knows how to balance work and play.
She told the Internationa Gymnast magazine about her Halloween celebrations. It was a typical Halloween on October 31, 2011, for the artistic gymnast, much like any other teenager.
She dressed up as M&Ms along with her friends and like every year, she celebrated the holiday and her father’s birthday, simultaneously at her house. The festival gave her a short break from her rigorous training.
Maroney currently trains at the All Olympia Gymnastics Center in Los Angeles setting up her own challenges to conquer for the 2012 Olympics.
