McLaren-Mercedes driver Jenson Button hoping to change his Silverstone luck – Formula 1 news
The 2009 Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button hoping to change his luck at Silverstone for the 2011 British Grand Prix scheduled to take place next weekend on July 10, 2011.
“My best finish at Silverstone is fourth, which I earned in 2004 and last year, after a great charge through the field after a disappointing performance in qualifying. Although it’s a place that’s not been too kind to me, I’m really looking forward to this
year’s race,” he said.
Button’s best finish at the British Grand Prix was back in 2004 and in 2010 when he finished in 4th place which means that he has never finished his home grand prix on the podium.
In 2011, he is hoping for a change as the circuit has undergone some recent renovation work. It is believed that McLaren will be one of the favourites for the win this weekend as the ban on the off-throttle Blown Diffusers is going to deteriorate Red Bull
Racing’s pace by around 5 tenths of a second. Eventually, the gap between the top three running teams of the sport will reduce.
“With a new start line, a new first corner and an all new pit and paddock complex, the new facilities should be fantastic, and I think they’ll confirm Silverstone as one of the best circuits in the world. Still, it’s going to be strange sitting on the grid
with the prospect of going flat into Abbey as the first corner!” said Button.
He added that since it is McLaren’s home race as well, the fan support is always overwhelming in Silverstone and the crowd is the most knowledgeable and loyal one in the whole world.
The former world champion is hoping of scoring his first British Grand Prix win this year but it is definitely not going to be easy with Sebastian Vettel at his best currently and the unpredictable change in pace of each team’s respective car.
Button is currently in 2nd place in the drivers’ standings with 109 points but he is 77 points adrift of the current championship leader Vettel who is leading the championship with 186 points.
McLaren are the only team that has been able to defeat Red Bull up until now but one has to admit that “luck” played a huge role in Jenson’s win at the Canadian Grand Prix. The upcoming British Grand Prix is going to be very vital for McLaren as it will
decide their 2011 championship chances.
