McLaren-Mercedes driver Jenson Button says long-term contract does not make sense – Formula 1 news
McLaren-Mercedes Formula 1 driver Jenson Button has said that he is not looking for a long-term tie up with any team at the moment.
Button, who took a memorable victory in the Canadian Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season, stated that he would love to race in Formula 1 only as long as he is fit.
The Brit added that although some of his colleagues in Formula 1 have already secured their future in the teams, he likes to race with an open end to his future.
Button stated, “If I didn't win any more championships I definitely wouldn't leave Formula One thinking that I've missed something. But the hunger for victory doesn't disappear so easily. I will stop when I'm bored to keep going around in circles, or if
I'm not fast enough.”
Talking about his future in Formula 1 and McLaren team, he said, “For me it makes no sense to sign a long term contract. I don't know how I'm going to feel in a few years. I just want to race for as long as I can win, McLaren has an option on me for next
year, that's all I know.”
Previously, McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh said that Button is open for an agreement if he wants to stay in the team.
However, Button has made his intentions clear for his future despite his teammate Lewis Hamilton opting to sign a long term contract with the team.
Moreover, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel have also renewed their contracts with their respective teams.
Button’s current contract with the McLaren team will see him through to the 2012 season. The Brit is showing some speed and aggression in his MP4-26 which could mean that he might stay long in the team.
For now, the 2011 Formula 1 season continues in Valencia on June 26 with the eighth grand prix of the season and Button is the second driver in the drivers’ championship behind Vettel.
