McLaren-Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton excited about the ‘new’ Silverstone circuit – Formula 1 news
The 2008 Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has said that he is excited about racing at the ‘new’ Silverstone circuit for the 2011 British Grand Prix.
The Silverstone circuit recently underwent renovation as the organisers of the circuit enhanced the pits and paddock areas of the circuit.
“For this year, of course, we head to a very new Silverstone, and while much has changed around the circuit and in the paddock, I’m sure that all those thousands of fans will be just as passionate as ever, it’s one of the greatest things about the Santander
British Grand Prix,” said Hamilton.
He added that he has some good memories from the circuit as he won the 2008 British Grand Prix which was one of the most ‘satisfying’ moments of his career. He won his home race for the first time and secured the title later on that year as well.
However, in 2011 along with the circuit, the regulations are going to go through some changes as well as the officials have decided to ban the off-throttle Blown Diffuser starting from the British Grand Prix which is expected to affect the order of the teams
to quite an extent.
Hamilton is quite interested to see the change in pace of each team this weekend as it is believed that the Red Bull Racing team is going to lose around 5 tenths of a second which would enable McLaren to challenge for race wins more actively.
“Going into this race, we’re facing some very stiff new interpretations of the regulations, while they’ll affect all teams, it will be interesting to see if the competitive order is changed as a result. It’s going to be a busy weekend for our engineers as
they adapt, as always, they’ll do a fantastic job to ensure we stay competitive,” he said.
Sebastian Vettel is currently leading the 2011 Formula 1 championship by a mile as he is 77 points ahead of his closest rivals Jenson Button and Mark Webber.
As a result, this race is going to be very important for Ferrari and McLaren. If they do not score good results in Silverstone, then their 2011 championship run might be over even before the second half of the season.
