McLaren-Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton still hopeful of 2011 title – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton has recently stated that his is still not giving up on the 2011 Formula 1 championship battle despite the fact that he is now over 100 points adrift of the current leader Sebastian Vettel.
“I'll really be pushing for a good result next weekend. I think we had a car capable of winning in both Belgium and Italy, so I really want to make sure we arrive in Singapore with a good set-up, and that we're able to run with it through practice and qualifying.
If it all goes to plan, we should be in good shape on Sunday,” he said.
Hamilton’s chances of winning the championship this year are very bleak and since he is mathematically alive in the championship, it is quite clear that he can still catch up with Vettel. However, that will require some miracles. His championship run is
currently reliant on Vettel’s failure so one has to credit the former world champion for making such a bold statement.
There are just 6 races left in the 2011 Formula 1 season which means that a maximum of 150 points are up for the grabs. However, even if Hamilton does secure the maximum amount of points, he cannot win the championship if Vettel keeps finishing races with
good points as the lead would not decrease much.
“Even though the title is now almost out of reach I'll be pushing hard for the best possible result. I will never give up and I'll be driving to win as always,” he added.
Other than that, the 2008 Formula 1 world champion is currently in 5th place in the drivers’ standings which means that there are 3 more competitors for the title. This also decreases his chances of scoring wins back-to-back and
catching up with the current championship leader.
The rest of the competitors for the drivers’ title have already stated that they will aim for the best possible results but aiming for the title this year is a long shot. Therefore, it was quite surprising to see that Hamilton still is optimistic for the
title this year. Let’s see how he fares in the remainder of the season.
