McLaren-Mercedes happy with Lewis Hamilton’s driving style – Formula 1 news
According to some reports, it has been revealed that McLaren-Mercedes are happy with Lewis Hamilton’s racing style and the team will not ask him to change his risk-taking approach.
Principal race engineer Phil Prew claims that Hamilton had a very inconsistent season but he is a great driver and has won races this year as well which clearly proves that he is trying to push to the limit as a result of which these sorts of incidents take
place.
“Obviously he came in to the season with great hopes of winning the championship and that's going to be an upward struggle from here - very difficult to achieve now - and I think his pushing hard brings some consequences of high risk. I think that's what
we're seeing,” he said.
The 2008 Formula 1 world champion has retired out of 4 races up until now as a result of crashes. Due to that, he is being criticised even by people like Niki Lauda but still Prew claims that the team is happy with his driving approach and they do not want
him to change.
“We will not ask him to change; Lewis is Lewis and Lewis gets results out of a very charging and aggressive approach and we fully support that. We've seen that has won him championships and that's ultimately our intention,” Prew added.
The main reason why McLaren are out of both the constructors’ and drivers’ standings is that they were unable to finish a handful of races. The team is still in the championship mathematically but in order to secure the titles, they would have to pull off
a number of miracles which is nearly impossible.
Lauda however stated that Hamilton needs to learn from his teammate Jenson Button who races very calmly and consistently and rarely retires as a result of an accident.
Both of the championships have been sealed technically for this year as there are just 7 races left and the championship leader, Sebastian Vettel, is around 100 points ahead of his closest rivals his teammate Mark Webber and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso.
