McLaren-Mercedes laud Pirelli’s tyre camber settings for 2011 Italian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
McLaren-Mercedes have welcomed Pirelli’s tyre camber settings for the upcoming 2011 Italian Grand Prix that will take place this Sunday, September 11.
McLaren had been looking to introduce some tyre camber changes before they entered the much-anticipated Italian Grand Prix. Hence, when Pirelli – the official Formula 1 tyre suppliers – announced the tyre camber recommendations for all the teams, McLaren
came forward and supported these changes.
Phil Prew, the British team’s principal race engineer said, “So hopefully we are prepared, we'll test and work with Pirelli on Friday to have a better understanding of the constraints and have a successful race.”
Pirelli has modified the advised tyre camber limit from a maximum 4 degrees to 3.75 degrees in reaction to the recent Belgian Grand Prix tyre fiasco. The recommendations by Pirelli are to ensure that there is no waste or over-heating of tyres and also to
make sure that the cars drive smoothly through high-speed corners and chicanes.
The Belgian Grand Prix that took place earlier this season witnessed a tyre-blistering issue, and to avoid the same at the Monza circuit this weekend, Pirelli has adopted a more conservative and cautious approach. The tyre blistering issue could have been
a major concern at the Monza racetrack, therefore to avoid that, Pirelli has come up with a timely change.
Prew has shown a positive reaction to this change and has agreed to follow them in the upcoming Italian Grand Prix.
Prew expressed his views on this minimisation of the camber limit set by Pirelli in a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes video conference.
Prew said, “As at all events we will work with Pirelli to optimise the tyre performance following their recommendations, but we work with Pirelli to optimise durability, lap time, grip, degradation etc. That's part of normal development testing work we do
over a normal race weekend.”
How the teams tackle the tyre camber issue at the upcoming race at Monza, we are yet to see as in retrospect, Monza could be a very tricky track.
