McLaren-Mercedes team principal Martin Whitmarsh defends Jenson Button – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has recently defended his more experienced driver Jenson Button who is being criticised for not scoring the required results.
Since Button still has not signed a contract for the 2012 Formula 1 season, he is in a very difficult situation at the moment.
“Jenson, like Fernando (Alonso), is battle hardened and experienced, but becoming a little more relaxed, intelligent and very cool in the cockpit. There are people who feel he does not give everything, or risk everything, but I ask the question: how then
have we seen from him this year things like Hungary, Canada and Belgium?” said Whitmarsh.
Other than that, Whitmarsh stated that Button, Hamilton and Fernando Alonso are among the best drivers in the sport currently.
“All three are absolutely brilliant, each in his way. It is hard to compare them just as you can't compare Picasso with van Gogh,” he added.
Nevertheless, McLaren are now pretty much out of championship as there are just 7 races left in the 2011 Formula 1 season and catching up with Red Bull Racing team’s lead will require a handful of miracles which in Formula 1 are not so easy.
McLaren are still in the championship mathematically but since Lewis Hamilton retired out of the Belgian Grand Prix, the team’s chances of securing either the drivers’ and constructors’ standings are low as they are not in a very comfortable position at
the moment.
However, these results are quite disappointing for both McLaren and Ferrari as they have not been able to defeat RBR in terms of championship since the 2010 Formula 1 season and both of the teams have not secured a single title since 2009.
In 2011, Vettel’s only active competitor is Mark Webber who is still 92 points adrift and even his chances of winning the drivers’ title are quite low as he can only win the championship if the reigning world champion retires at least out of 2 of the remaining
7 races of the season.
Since Vettel has not retired out of a single race up until now in the 2011 Formula 1 season, the odds are against the Aussie.
