McLaren aiming to close gap during qualifying rounds in second half of 2011 season – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 McLaren team is aiming to close gap during the qualifying rounds in the last eight rounds of the 2011 Formula 1 season with new updates.
The team believes the new aero updates including new wing in their MP4-26 car will play supportive role for them in the second half of the ongoing season.
McLaren’s managing director Jonathan Neale said that the team’s performance in qualifying rounds has improved race-by-race. However, he added that they are confident for the last stages of the season, as they will take part in next races with some new upgrades.
Neale commented, “I'm pleased to say that - except for the slight blip at the British Grand Prix – the trend has been good and we have been closing in. We haven't got the cars in the right part of the grid, but we are developing at a better rate and there
are a series of upgrades planned for these next two races.”
He added, “You have a choice to make: do you want to the get the downforce and aero efficiency from the car, or are you after the greater drag reduction? Now that we have got ourselves into a situation where we believe we are competitive, we have been able
to devote time to the DRS system.”
The Woking-based outfit’s managing director also mentioned that they need a very competitive car for some time in order to close the gap from Red Bull in the second half of the ongoing season.
Both of the drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are performing very well for their team in the season. After winning four rounds in the season so far, they are very aggressive at the moment and ready to continue to fight in order to challenge the 2011
championship.
McLaren are at the second place ahead of Ferrari with 280 points in the 2011 constructors’ championship at the moment. There is still a gap of 103 points between Red Bull and McLaren.
Let’s see whether McLaren can close the gap from Red Bull Racing in the last stages of the season or not.
