McLaren believes it still has chance of making the most out of the season – Formula 1 news
McLaren believes that making more of its opportunities is going to be key to their bid for the Championship title.
McLaren are hoping for better results in the second half of the season. Team principal Martin Whitmarsh believes that the team has the base required to win the title it has not been able to use that base to its potential so far but hopes that the team will
in the remainder of the season.
McLaren was tipped to be the favourite team in the earlier stages of the season especially after the opening race in Australia where Jenson Button win the Grand Prix. The team however lost its way as Button failed to repeat his performance and lost pace
due to poor understanding of the Pirelli compounds.
Lewis Hamilton however has been in good form in the current season and has kept the team in the hunt for it title bid. The team needs both its drivers to score points for it to claim the title and judging by the duo’s performance in the last two races prior
to the summer break the future looks bright.
Whitmarsh revealed to Autosport that the team knows where it has under-performed and is now looking to improve in the remainder of the season. He said that there is every chance for the team to take the title the team only needs to work hard.
“In the first 11 races we were on the front row eight times, so the car is not slow in qualifying at least,” he explained. “But this season has been difficult for everyone – and you would have to say Fernando and Ferrari have done a great job: one in terms
of development and two in terms of getting the best out of the package. We haven't got the best out of our package.”
“We have been working hard on that and made a bit of progress, but you have to avoid mistakes as well. We have made a few mistakes, and you have to eliminate them, but we have made a bit of progress there,” he added.
It will be interesting to see how McLaren fares as the second half of the season resumes after the summer break.
