McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh hints at small upgrades for 2011 Turkish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
McLaren team Principal Martin Whitmarsh has said that the team has decided to bring small upgrades for the 2011 Turkish Grand Prix.
He also mentioned that all Formula 1 teams are ready to bring significant upgrades in their package, since nobody can sit still when the competition gets tough on the grid.
McLaren admitted that they understand they need to improve more in practice sessions and qualifying round. The reason of upgrades in their car for the Turkish race is only to reduce its gap with Red Bull Racing team, as it is still very strong team of Formula
1 and also have a potential to beat all teams on the track.
The team principal said, “Winning in China was a fantastic reward for all the hard effort that's been undertaken both at the racetrack and the McLaren Technology Centre to turn MP4-26 into a race winner. We're excited and encouraged by the pace and consistency
that both drivers have shown in the opening three flyaway races, but the return to Europe brings fresh challenges.”
The Woking-based outfit will be evaluating small upgrades in their car during the Friday practice session of the upcoming race of the season. These upgrades included some aerodynamic refinements to the bodywork of the MP4-26.
The team driver Lewis Hamilton had surprised the viewers by winning the Chinese Grand Prix. He completed his excellent run ahead of both the Australia and Malaysia Grands Prix winner, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel. Despite Hamilton’s run at the Shanghai circuit,
all team members’ observation is that Red Bull still have the fastest car on the grid and McLaren are trying to close the gap.
After the success in the 2011 Chinese Grand Prix, Whitmarsh says development race is going to be key throughout the season.
He added, “Our pace of development is what can win us this championship, and we go into Turkey determined to ensure our upgrades deliver practical gains and are able to confer a useful margin to both drivers.”
He further added that McLaren’s one-two finish during the 2010 season in Turkey was one of their most interesting races, which will probably encourage the whole team to perform even better during the upcoming race weekend.
All the teams have reached Istanbul for the season’s fourth race. The competition between McLaren and Red Bull in the Turkish Grand Prix will be interesting to see.
