McLaren confident about United States GP after Young Driver Test – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has said that they are feeling confident about the 2012 Untied States Grand Prix after testing their car in a three-day Young Driver Test held at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.
Whitmarsh said that they have efficiently evaluated their updates during the test and admired the performance of the drivers which include Gary Paffett, Kevin Magnussen and Oliver Turvey, who remained busy in testing MP4-27 in Abu Dhabi.
Furthermore, he said that they have successfully managed to gather the necessary information about their car’s update package which will definitely help in making additional developments.
In addition, he said that they are positively looking forward to perform well in the approaching race and are hoping to attain good results with a faster car.
“We do have some technical tests. We have some fairly experienced young drivers, one of them [Paffett] is 31, that is the nature of F1 unfortunately,” he told
Autosport.
“A team like ours uses it for a range of technical developments so you will see a very heavily-instrumented car doing lots of aerodynamic runs and lots of configurations,” he said. “I would be disappointed if we come out of that without arriving in Texas
with something that we can put on car that makes us quicker or have a better understanding that makes us quicker, because that is how we are.”
Besides, he insisted that having a competent car is not enough as they still need to resolve their reliability issues which have hindered the performance of their drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, in many races until now.
Nevertheless, he said that they are trying their best to come up stronger in the final two rounds of the ongoing season so as to make their mark stronger in this year’s championship fight.
At present, the Woking based team is standing at third place in the constructors’ championship. Additionally, they are ahead of Lotus and are behind their main opponent, Ferrari.
It will be very exciting to see how they compete in the last two grands prix of the season and whether they beat the Scarlet team in the championship battle or not.
