McLaren deny links with PURE as their engine providers for 2014 season and beyond – Formula 1 news
McLaren have denied reports that they are planning a deal with PURE to feature their engines in 2014.
2014 will mark a different era of Formula 1, as the sport will be moving to V6 turbo charged engines. The decision to move to V6 turbo engines has come at the backdrop of the economic downturn that has shaken the world.
Formula 1 felt the effects of recession in 2007 and since has worked towards making the game financially more supportive for all the teams.
Major teams like Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull can survive with the financial backing that they have but smaller teams like Caterham, Marussia and HRT have found it hard to cope with the pressures of finances.
The issue has also led to increased number of pay drivers being hired by smaller teams which has been seen widely as a downfall in the quality of the sport measuring sponsorship backings over skill and talent.
In November 2011, McLaren was rumoured to be looking to switch to Honda engines from 2014.
McLaren denied those rumours as well, and now it has come to deny the reports of links with PURE.
“McLaren has had absolutely no contact with PURE for many months,” a McLaren spokesman told Reuters. “Moreover, the contact we did have with PURE, many months ago, was of an entirely informal nature, and was merely a courtesy gesture.”
McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale was adamant that Mercedes-Benz is not going to be using PURE engines and is happy using Mercedes engines.
So far, no team has announced any details over how they will be preparing for the big change at the start of 2014. It is being speculated that major companies like Honda, Toyota and Pure engines will be very interesting in the new format of the sport.
It will be interesting to see how financially welcoming this move will be once implemented and how much of an impact it will have on the sport and the following of its supporters. For those questions to be answered though one would have to wait until 2014.
