McLaren driver Jenson Button claims beating Force India is not their main target – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Jenson Button has clarified that beating Force India is not their main target in the 2013 Formula 1 World Championship and they have some bigger goals to achieve.
The Woking based squad have faced a lot of technical and tyre management problems in the season so far because of which Button and his teammate, Sergio Perez have not been able to score good points with consistency. They are currently standing at 6th place
in the constructors’ championship with 29 points. Furthermore, they are ahead of Toro Rosso and behind their major opponent, Force India who have delivered some remarkable performances in the season until now.
The 2009 world champion has said that despite their hard work, they have not been able to develop a competent car as compared to their main rivals. He asserted that beating the Silverstone based team is not their main aim. However, he insisted that they
will have to compete well with Force India before going for the bigger goals.
“We’re not moving forward quick enough, but we’re doing everything we can. Obviously beating Force India is not what McLaren is all about, but we’re behind them in the Championship, so that’s what we have to aim for first and then go for bigger targets,”
he said.
Besides, he stated that they are looking forward to keep on making some the essential developments in their car so as to improve its pace for the approaching races in order to make their mark stronger in this year’s title fight.
“At least with the new package we have, the exciting thing is it’s a new platform, very similar to what we had last year, and we can build on that a lot easier because we know what we’re doing. It’s not going to happen overnight, it’s still tough, but we’re
doing what we can,” he added.
It will be important to note that the British squad faced immense reliability issues during the last few races of 2012 because of which they lost some crucial points in the championship battle.
Let’s see how they perform in the approaching races and whether they will be able to resolve their problems or not.
