McLaren driver Jenson Button claims that pole position in Korea will be a challenge – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Jenson Button has claimed that achieving a pole position at the 2012 Formula 1 Korean Grand Prix will be difficult.
Sebastian Vettel of the Red Bull Racing team set the lead pace in the second practice session held at the Yeongam racing circuit on Friday. Button himself finished the fourth fastest behind Vettel, 0.387 seconds adrift.
Button has expressed his confidence regarding the race pace of his car though he confessed to confusion about balancing between straight-line pace and using downforce at the corners of the circuit. He admitted to being slow in the straight-line track and
said that it has been tricky to decide how much downforce they should be putting in around rest of the track.
Button said, “They've got that 0.4 seconds again in practice and I think they're going to be very difficult to beat in qualifying; they seem to have that strength back," he said. "Our race pace today seemed to be competitive but over one lap we're still
lacking so it's an area we need to work on. But I feel the direction that we've gone with the car is positive so there is still more to come.”
Button’s teammate Lewis Hamilton has also expressed his surprise over their lack of pace. Hamilton had come in 0.498 seconds behind his teammate. He had been the one with the lead pace in the first session but in FP2, he had been 0.885 seconds behind Vettel.
He admitted that this was a significant difference from his performance in FP1. He thinks that the cause could be the small change they made on the rear ride height.
Hamilton thinks they need to be calm and show trust in the pace of their car. He is sure they can use it to their advantage. He also appreciated that his teammate Button was in good position.
Button also added, “We have made good progress. Still not quick enough but I think we're going in the right direction.”
