McLaren driver Jenson Button concedes 2011 drivers’ championship – Formula 1 news
The former Formula 1 champion Jenson Button has recently admitted after the German Grand Prix that his chances of winning the drivers’ title are bleak since he retired out of two races consecutively at Silverstone and Nurburgring.
“But as for the championship, I don't think we're fighting for that anymore, so I'm just going to go out there and do the best at every race I'm in. My intention now is to be back on the podium for my 200th grand prix,” said Button.
McLaren were looking quite strong at the Nurburgring since Lewis Hamilton secured the 2nd place on the grid and took the lead during the race quite comfortably ahead of Mark Webber.
Hamilton’s qualifying time was just 5 hundredths of a second short of Webber’s pole position scoring time which proves that McLaren’s pace is improving immensely and now they are quite competitive.
“It's disappointing to have so many failures, I appear to be suffering a lot of bad luck. Hopefully we'll be over this soon, we can have a bit more luck on our side and we can have some good races,” said the 2009 Formula 1 world champion.
However, since Button has admitted that he does not have a shot at the title this year, there is a possibility that his team might urge him to support his teammate in the title run and probably help him get as close to the championship leader Sebastian Vettel
as they can.
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso is also a close competitor of the drivers’ title alongside Mark Webber as these three drivers are divided by just 9 points.
With Vettel’s performance deteriorating and McLaren and Ferrari’s performance improving, it seems that the championship is getting even more interesting now.
Hamilton secured his second victory of the season while Red Bull faced their second consecutive defeat as a result of which, the reigning world champions are now losing some points and their lead in the drivers’ standings has started decreasing.
