McLaren driver Jenson Button hoping to challenge Red Bull Racing Team for titles – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Jenson Button has said that his Malaysian Grand Prix result was a ‘requirement’ for him in order to begin his championship bid effectively.
Jenson scored the second position behind Red Bull Racing Team’s Sebastian Vettel who scored his second consecutive win of the 2011 season. Vettel currently has a perfect score of 50 as he has scored two pole positions followed by race wins in the first two
races of the new Formula 1 season.
“It gives me confidence. The feeling of the car is good and that is important to me. We can't let the Red Bulls have it all their own way for much longer. This is again a step forward in terms of performance and it has to keep happening,” Button told the
media.
Button finished in 6th place at the season opening Australian Grand Prix after going through a drive-through penalty while his teammate Lewis Hamilton had to face a post-race penalty for the Malaysian Grand Prix. Due to that penalty, Hamilton
dropped to 8th place from 7th.
However, it seems that only McLaren have the ability to take on Red Bull as both of their drivers put up a brilliant performance in the qualifying sessions and during the Malaysian Grand Prix.
“Hopefully we can take the fight to Red Bull because everyone wants to see that. Our aim is to challenge these guys but it's not that easy - they are very, very fast. At this moment in time, Sebastian is the person to beat. He has a 24-point lead and that
is a lot from two races but there are still 17 to go,” said the 2009 Formula 1 world champion.
He added that none of the teams has been as consistent as Red Bull are and his team needs to work on its reliability and pace soon in order to get back into contention for the 2011 championship.
