McLaren driver Jenson Button hoping to stay at the team in 2012 Formula 1 season
McLaren’s Jenson Button has recently stated that he wants to stay at the team for 2012 at least but his future is still uncertain as he is the only driver out of the championship competitors who does not have a confirm race seat for the 2012 Formula 1 season.
“Well, if he (Martin Whitmarsh) takes up the option. All he has to do is say yes, and I will say yes because I want to be here next year. It's up to the team as to when they approach me, but for me I'm the happiest I've been with the car,” said Button.
The team has not confirmed Button yet or signed an official contract with him regarding this matter but the team has admitted that they want to keep the same drivers line-up for the next year as well.
There were rumours at first that Lewis Hamilton might leave the team to join either Red Bull Racing or Ferrari but now, RBR have confirmed Mark Webber for the 2012 Formula 1 season officially while Ferrari are yet to make an announcement regarding its final
drivers’ line-up.
However regarding Hamilton’s “crash record” Button echoed Whitmarsh’s statement and claimed that the 2008 world champion was very unlucky at this past weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.
He added that this is how things are in Formula 1 and that he is aware of these issues as well since he also had a pretty challenging and inconsistent 2011 Formula 1 season up until now.
“I had some pretty bad luck through Valencia, Silverstone and the Nurburgring, and he is getting it now. It would be nice to go through a whole season without any of that, but sometimes you can't. Keeping your nose clean is important, obviously, when you
are fighting for a championship,” said Button.
Nevertheless after this past weekend’s race, it seems that McLaren’s chances of challenging for the titles are quite low and like Ferrari, they might have to shift their focus completely on their 2012 car sometime soon as well.
