McLaren driver Jenson Button not afraid to return to Sao Paulo – Formula 1 news
Jenson Button says he has no apprehensions over his return to Brazil, after he had a narrow escape from an approach of armed assailants in 2010.
Button along with his father, team manager and trainer were leaving the Interlagos circuit following the qualifier on Saturday evening when a group of armed goons tried to stop them, though they remained unsuccessful in their attempt as the police-trained
driver of the car heroically drove the car through traffic into safety.
Button though remained positive and mentioned the incident with an air of casualness to the incident. He said that it had happened to the team staff like engineers and mechanics and the drivers were always on the cards. It had to happen at some point, and
it did, Button said.
His upbeat behaviour even after the whole ordeal was almost unreal for what he witnessed first hand, and went even a step further to praise the circuit and the atmosphere of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
“It's a tough one because it's such a good grand prix. I love racing at Sao Paulo. There is a special atmosphere, even when your team-mate is Brazilian (as in 2009 with Rubens Barrichello) and you are fighting for the world championship. I still love it
there because they are so passionate, and there is so much history at that circuit. It's a pity things do happen there when we leave the circuit, but I think that just shows the divide in Brazil,” he said.
Although he remains adamant that he is not worried about going back and understands that there is going to be heightened security measures taken to make sure the drivers remain safe from incidents like that.
Safety will be looked after for sure for all during the event, but the main focus would be the Grand Prix, and as it is the last race of the season, it is sure to be an exciting finish to an exhilarating season.
Button is poised to finish second on the drivers’ championship, even after deliberate focus of the Red Bull management and drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, to trump Button, but the McLaren driver has remained strong and has had a fantastic season.
Let’s see how he fares in the season finale this weekend.
