McLaren driver Jenson Button says Red Bull Racing crack under pressure – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Formula 1 driver Jenson Button has stated that the Red Bull Racing team makes mistakes when they are under pressure, which was demonstrated by Sebastian Vettel in the Montreal Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Button stated that McLaren can have a shot at the 2011 championship if constant pressure is applied on Vettel which will induce more errors from the German.
Button, who cashed in on Vettel’s mistake in the last lap of the Montreal GP said, “One thing it does is it does make me smile, because it shows that if we put them under pressure then maybe they will make mistakes. And at this moment of the season that
is exactly what we have got to do.”
The Brit added, “They had their issues in the pit stop in Monaco a couple of times, putting the wrong tyres on the car, and then Sebastian running wide on the last lap of the race [in Canada]. So we have to keep doing that, keep putting them under pressure,
because if we don't then they are invincible.”
Button also admitted that Vettel’s RB7 is too fast on any given circuit that McLaren will need a little bit of luck to run through them. The Brit added that Monaco was a pure bad luck for the McLaren team when after leading the race he was still unable to
win the race.
Vettel led for 69 laps of the Montreal race and in the very last lap, he made a mistake and ran wide to open up an opportunity for Button to squeeze his name among the winning drivers in the 2011 season.
Although Vettel cursed the Drag Reduction System zone for his mistake, the Brit thinks that for the first time in the 2011 season, McLaren were lucky.
Vettel leads the drivers’ championship table with 161 points and Button is second on the table with a 60-point deficit.
The eighth race of the 2011 season will be contested in Valencia on Sunday, June 26.
