McLaren driver Jenson Button says every Formula 1 driver learning a new trade in 2011
2009 Formula 1 champion Jenson Button of McLaren has said that every driver in the sport is learning a new trade in the ongoing 2011 season.
According to Button, this is because of the new set of rules and devices introduced by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) for the season.
“I think all the teams are learning about this new style of racing in 2011. I think it'll get more straightforward as we start to see more of a convergence of strategies and ideas over the next couple of races. Obviously, it's the tyres that everyone needs
to get a better handle on,” said Button.
Because the drivers now have to do a lot of work in the cockpit, it is believed that the drivers nowadays drive differently as compared to the drivers of the sport from the past. These changes to the sport are making it more entertaining as well as more
difficult at the same time.
With the introduction of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System and Drag Reduction System, the drivers have to do most of the work in order to get the best out of their respective cars instead of the teams while they are on track.
KERS is a device which stores heat energy after converting it into kinetic energy for later use which gives a power boost to the car when needed.
DRS is a device which changes the angle of a car’s rear wing in the middle of the race. Both of these devices are controlled by the drivers during the race.
In past, all the drivers had to do was to use their respective machines efficiently and just drive. The strategic factor from the driver’s side has now increased vitally because of which Jenson Button believes that the driving style of the sport is different
from what it used to be in the past.
Button has been performing pretty well so far as he scored a podium at the Malaysian Grand Prix. He is hoping for better results at the upcoming Turkish Grand Prix which is scheduled to be held in three weeks time.
