McLaren driver Jenson Button says he is still aiming for title – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Jenson Button has said that he is still aiming to win the title in the 2013 Formula 1 season despite a poor start.
Button has not been able to secure competitive results in the first two races of the season. In the season opener, he could only score 2 points with his 9th
place finish after qualifying for 10th grid slot. Later, in the Malaysian Grand Prix, he failed to score any points for his team because of a wheel gun issue and came 17th even after showing up some good pace in the qualifying.
Nonetheless, the British driver has said that he is not feeling disappointed by his slow start and is confidently looking forward to win this year’s championship
fight. Moreover, he said that they were quicker for most of the time in the second race as compared to their main rivals, Lotus and Ferrari. Therefore, he believes that they can win the title in this season.
“The championship is still on as far as I am concerned and I am aiming for that. Definitely,” Button told the Mirror. “Sebastian almost beat me to the title in
2009 and he didn't score for the first four races. It's a massive turnaround for us. Most of the race in Sepang we were quicker than the Lotus. Most of the race we were quicker than Ferrari.”
Besides, he said that they still need to make some essential developments in their car in order to achieve better results in the season ahead. In addition, he said
that the competition is really tough and they will have to work harder to make their mark stronger in this year’s championship.
“We are still not where we want to be and we got a bit lucky with the circuit being so smooth which helped a bit but a lot is understanding where the downforce
is,” he added.
The 2009 world champion performed convincingly well in 2012. However, he struggled with some reliability and tyre management issues due to which he could not secure
a competitive position in the last season. Let’s see how he performs in the forthcoming races.
