McLaren driver Jenson Button says three-stop strategy worked well in Spain – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Jenson Button has said that his three-stop strategy for the Spanish Grand Prix worked well for him.
He said the first lap of the Spanish Grand Prix was a complete disaster when many cars overtook him just before the first turn.
Button added that the three-stop strategy was decided halfway through the race which was a little nervous decision. The Brit seemed glad that the strategy worked out better than it did in the Turkish Grand Prix.
Button finished on podium for the second time in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
He said, “The first lap was a disaster. I got a pretty poor start and three or four cars came past and braking on Turn 1, then cars went wide and the same at Turn 3. It was a frustrating first lap and then initially I could not overtake the cars in front.”
The Brit added that once the first stint of every front running car was over, it became evident that he was eventually going for a podium. He also said that if he had taken a good start, he would have challenged his teammate Lewis Hamilton as well.
Button overtook two of the leading drivers Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber in the middle part of the race. He was also able to shake off Webber in the final stages of the race to claim the last podium position.
For the second time in the 2011 season, Button was put on a three pit stop strategy by his team after having a disastrous race in Turkey.
“As soon as I knew we were on that strategy I was happy looking at what people were doing. For me to do three stops was a no-brainer really, and it worked out pretty well in the end,” commented Button.
The season continues in Monaco on May 29, 2011 with the sixth grand prix of the season. Button sits fourth on the drivers’ championship table with 61 points.
