McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton accepts his mistake for crash at Spa – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton has admitted that his collision with Kamui Kobayashi during this past weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix was his fault as a result of which Hamilton had to retire out of the race and now his championship run has been dented massively.
“After watching the replay, I realise it was my fault today 100%. I didn't give Kobayashi enough room though I thought I was past. Apologies to Kamui and to my team. The team deserves better from me,” he said.
Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber secured the 1st and 2nd places respectively giving Red Bull Racing Team a 1-2 finish as a result of which RBR have increased their lead in the constructors’ standings while
Vettel has increased his lead massively in the drivers’ standings as well.
His closest rival now is Mark Webber and it seems that the championship run for Ferrari and McLaren is pretty much over now despite the fact that they are still mathematically ‘alive’ in the championship.
Nevertheless, Hamilton claims that the car’s pace was pretty good and that if he had not retired out of the race, he would have finished in a very strong position.
“There have been quite a few races this year where we've not finished, and this is another - but that's motor racing. At least our pace was reasonably good this weekend, so let's hope we can win more races in the remainder of the season,” he said.
Either way, McLaren had a disappointing race weekend overall and this was not the kind of result they were aiming for especially since they dominated the last two races of the season.
Ferrari and McLaren have nothing to lose now and they must take risks in order to pull off some ‘amazing’ miracles as that is the only way they can close in on Vettel’s lead.
After that, all they can do is wait and expect the reigning world champion to make ‘big mistakes’ so that he loses points which will give McLaren and Ferrari a little hope.
