McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton admits his mistake for 2011 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix failure
McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton has said it was his fault that he did not win the 2011 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix after a ‘pointless’ pit decision and a mistake after which Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso took over the 3rd place during the race.
He wanted to clear it out that it was not the team’s fault and apologised to them for not giving them their first 1-2 finish of the 2011 Formula 1 season as Jenson Button was in 2nd place while Hamilton was leading.
“It was a shame we didn't get a one-two, but that was really my fault. Sorry for the team we didn't. I'm disappointed with myself, but it's holiday now and I'm going to go and have some fun. I'm relaxed, relieved. I'm looking forward to going away after
what was a tricky race and getting my head back into gear,” said Hamilton.
The 2008 world champion took a risk and shifted to intermediate tyres while the rest of the drivers stayed outside for a couple of laps. Unfortunately for Hamilton, the rain lasted for just 2 laps as a result of which, he had to shift back to the dry tyres
by taking another pit.
However, the team did get a pretty good result in the end as Jenson Button won the race and Hamilton finished in a disappointing 4th place.
“I need to have a think about what went wrong, a mistake on the track and other things, but at least the team got some good points. The team have done a fantastic job to get us where we are,” he said.
Nevertheless, the former world champion is still in a very competitive position in the drivers’ standings as he is just around 90 points adrift of the championship leader Sebastian Vettel.
Jenson Button is now also closing in on the reigning champion in the drivers’ standings as a result of which, it seems that McLaren must enable both of their drivers to perform at their best and probably, get even closer to Vettel at the coming races.
