McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton lauds DRS and KERS hybrid for the 2011 Formula 1 season
2008 Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has praised the Drag Reduction System and Kinetic Energy Recovery System for the 2011 Formula 1 season.
The Brit said that the spectators have witnessed four great races in the ongoing season so far due to the devices.
Talking about the McLaren’s 2011 car, MP4-26, Hamilton commented that some upgrades were planned for the Turkish Grand Prix, but the team decided to run a simple car and wait for the Spanish Grand Prix for the upgrades.
Hamilton said, “I enjoy racing with KERS Hybrid and DRS it makes it more entertaining for the drivers and the fans. I think we’ve definitely had four interesting races so far this year.”
He further added that the rules may play against you when you are in front but overall, the 2011 rules were impressive.
At the Turkish Grand Prix, both McLarens of Hamilton and Jenson Button were not fighting for a podium position because the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso came out of the blue to claim a podium.
In addition, Hamilton had a bad start and also a faulty pit-stop which made it impossible for him to go for a podium in the final few laps of the race. The Brit finished in fourth with almost a gap of 40 seconds from the third running driver, Alonso.
Still, Hamilton is confident about his championship chances as he explains about the McLaren upgrades.
“We’re fighting to bring lots of new parts to the track, and it isn’t always possible to run them - either from a performance or reliability point of view. Even before first practice, we knew we were going to have to scale back our ambitions on the development
front for this particular race,” stated Hamilton.
He further added that the fourth position was a good win looking at the car and conditions. Moreover, Hamilton commented that Ferrari and Mercedes were expected to throw in a challenge and Turkish Grand Prix results were not a surprise.
The next venue in the 2011 Formula 1 calendar is the Spanish Grand Prix which will be contested on May 22.
