McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton says British Grand Prix was as good as it could get – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has stated that the British Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season was as close as it could get.
The British driver added that the support of the people coming in on the race day was enormous and the team also did a good job to put up such an impressive show.
Hamilton, who ended fourth on the day, added that the start and the end of the race were great as he was able to fight for positions in the whole race distance.
Hamilton started the race on a positive note when he moved from tenth place to fourth in the opening few laps of the race. At one stage, Hamilton was even fighting for a podium position when he overtook Fernando Alonso as the track was still wet.
However, soon after that aggression, Hamilton was told by his team that his fuel is on critical level and he might not see the chequered flag and for that, he needed to maintain his pace. In addition, Hamilton defended his place against Ferrari’s Felipe
Massa in the very last moments of the race, which made the race even more spectacular.
Hamilton said, “I had a good start, made some places up but unfortunately towards end I had to save fuel. I had to give Webber his position. Then on the last lap they said now you can push and I was like 'thanks, after I'd let him catch me up' but I was
not giving him that position.”
Talking about the support of the Silverstone crowd, Hamilton commented, “That was as close as it's going to get. It was crazy. First of all, the team did a fantastic job with all the pit stops. Coming here today, knowing the support we had, I've never seen
so many people here. I felt it spurring me on.”
The 2011 Formula 1 season continues in Germany with the tenth race of the season on July 24. McLaren team is still second on the constructors’ table but both Hamilton and his teammate Jenson Button have dropped positions in the drivers’ championship.
