McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton wins German Grand Prix to take second win of 2011 Formula 1 season
Even though McLaren were not looking as quick as Ferrari or Red Bull Racing throughout the German Grand Prix weekend, Lewis Hamilton secured the second place on the grid before winning his second race of the 2011 Formula 1 season at the legendary Nurburgring
circuit.
Hamilton drove quite well throughout the race as he kept his cool and scored perfect laps until the very end of the race while his teammate Jenson Button retired out of the race due to a hydraulics failure.
The 2008 world champion was followed by Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in second place and this is the first time that Sebastian Vettel, the reigning world champion and current championship leader did not finish in the top two this season.
Alonso recently won his first race of the 2011 Formula 1 season at the British Grand Prix after which he closed in on Vettel’s lead quite noticeably and jumped to 3rd place in the drivers’ standings. With this 2nd place finish in Nurburgring,
he has now closed in even more on the reigning world champion.
Red Bull did not have a ‘podium-less’ finish as Mark Webber scored the 3rd place after starting from pole position. He was followed by his teammate who luckily finished in 4th place after winning a ‘pit race’ during the very last lap
of the race with Felipe Massa.
Massa was ahead of Vettel in 4th place throughout the race but unluckily, both of the drivers had to pit after which he lost his track position to the reigning world champion.
Adrian Sutil on the other hand finished in 6th place ahead of the two Mercedes GP drivers Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher who scored the 7th and 8th places respectively.
It was a tough race for Mercedes GP but in the end, they got what they needed as they finished ahead of both of the Lotus Renault GP drivers and increased their lead in the constructors’ standings.
Vitaly Petrov was the only Renault driver to secure any points for Renault as he finished in 10th place while Kamui Kobayashi finished in 9th place ahead of him.
Sebastian Vettel is still leading the championship by 77 points but it seems that Webber, Alonso and Hamilton are closing in on him and defeating him is not a miracle anymore.
