McLaren drivers Hamilton and Button play down Vettel’s dominance in 2011 season – Formula 1 news
The British pair of the McLaren-Mercedes team, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button have played down the fact that Sebastian Vettel will cruise away with a second world title in a row in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
So far, Sebastian Vettel has a 34-point lead over the second driver Hamilton but still the Brit thinks that the German defending champion can be overtaken in the upcoming races.
Hamilton said that although the German has a healthy lead but still he will try his best to get as close to him as possible in the next race.
He said, “Sebastian is dominating. I don't have a fear [the championship will be over by midway through]; it is possible, but it is also possible we could catch up and overtake them.”
On the other hand, Hamilton’s teammate Button also thinks that Vettel’s dominance will not be forever.
The 2009 champion said, “I'm not thinking the title is slipping away already. What's the point in saying that? I mean, Jesus Christ guys, let's not make it too negative. We just need more pace, and hopefully we'll turn up in Barcelona next week with that.”
Button added that all McLaren need is to get the maximum out of their car and the rest can be left on the Pirelli tyres and 2011 innovations.
Four races into the 2011 season, Vettel has managed three wins (Australia, Malaysia, Turkey) and one podium finish (China). The only time he could not win in the ongoing season was due to a wrong pit stop call from the Red Bull team when Vettel was on two
pit-stop strategy and lost enormous track time due to the degrading Pirelli tyres.
Other than that, Vettel’s run has been unmatchable from pole position.
McLaren will face a tough challenge from not only Vettel, but also from Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg in the upcoming back-to-back races in Spain and Monaco.
