McLaren focused on making improvements – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has said that they are focusing on making the necessary improvements by eradicating the mistakes which they have committed in the last couple of races.
Lewis Hamilton of McLaren topped the timesheets in the qualifying of 2012 Spanish Grand Prix held at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. However, he started the race from the last grid position as he was disqualified from the pole because he failed to keep
the minimum level of fuel in the car before moving back to the pits.
Even though, Whitmarsh suspected that the fuel may run out at the end, he made a call to keep Hamilton on track. Nevertheless, he admitted his mistake afterwards and admitted the decision of the race stewards.
Additionally, Hamilton’s teammate, Jenson Button also faced difficulties in the Spanish GP with the tyres and the setup of the car as he came 9th in the race after setting off from 10th place in the grid.
Furthermore, in the fourth race at Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, the 2008 world champion could only secure 8th place finish as he lost some crucial time due to poor pit stop strategy of the Woking based team.
Nonetheless, Whitmarsh expressed that they are making the best of the efforts to erase all the mistakes which they have done in the last two races in order to better prepare themselves for the forthcoming races and to make their position stronger in this
2012 F1 World Championship.
“One mistake can do it, and we have made some,” he explained. “It is painful, frustrating and difficult in the team, and we get a fair amount of external scrutiny and criticisms. But believe me, we are much harder on ourselves and it is reasonable to be
criticised if you are not getting it right.”
He added, “We are learning something, but I don't think there is anyone here who convinces me that they understand these tyres and knows comfortably and confidently how to exploit them on a regular basis.”
Over and above, he said that it is very hard to making projections about the upcoming races as there have been five different winners in the first five races. Even so, he said that they are aiming to be at the front in the approaching season.
