McLaren hopeful about reclaiming second position in constructors’ championship – Formula 1 news
McLaren are looking forward to reclaiming their second place in the constructors’ championship which they lost to Ferrari after the Korean Grand Prix.
The season had started off good for the team but their performance kept declining gradually. They had their most miserable performance in the Korean GP after Lewis Hamilton had to suffer from a car failure and struggled throughout the race only to finish
tenth with a single point. Hamilton not only lost his chance at the title after this but also the team lost their second standing on the constructors’ grid falling to third behind Ferrari.
The team had expressed their determination to fight until the end of the season just ahead of the Indian Grand Prix that took place last weekend. McLaren was true their word as both drivers brought the team back up among the point scorers. Hamilton finished
fourth while teammate Jenson Button finished fifth bringing in a score of twenty-two points together. The Indian GP performance has given the team hope to come back up on the grid.
The sporting director for the team, Sam Michael, stated, “It's pretty difficult for us to win the constructors' championship now because Red Bull can wrap that up at the next race, so our target is that we at least get back to second place. We are within
10 points of Ferrari so that should be able to happen as long as we start getting everything right. We'll have to start finishing higher up to achieve that and start finishing ahead of Ferrari.”
McLaren’s true intentions for the Indian GP were to attain a podium finish. The team said that the cause of their failure to achieve the podium were the issues they had to deal regarding their pace on the soft tyres. The team principal, Martin Whitmarsh,
explained that once they had worn out the option tyre, their pace decreased but they regained speed after replacing with the prime although they had lost enough time on the laps by then.
Despite not being able to gain a podium position, the team is happy to be able to score reasonable points and are looking forward to the remaining races.
