McLaren in media spotlight before heading for Abu Dhabi GP
The 2010 Formula One season is undoubtedly the most adventurous and thrilling season in the 60 years’ history of the sport. With only one more race to go and just 25 points to play for, the top four drivers remain equally adamant to bag the championship
that has seen so many twists and turns.
As the teams now head for the 19th and the last race of the season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the British team, McLaren talked to the media explaining their fears and aspirations from the next round.
The title defender, Jenson Button walks towards the next arena with a heavy heart as he is out of the Championship battle now. The British driver currently stands at 5th place in the scores’ tally with his 199 points whereas the charts’ topper,
Fernando Alonso has a total of 246 points.
While talking to the media just before heading for Abu Dhabi, Button said, “Obviously, it was disappointing to be ruled out of the drivers’ championship in Brazil last week, but I was very pleased with my race, which was a lot of fun, and I’m already looking
forward to another good performance this weekend.”
The last year’s debut race in Abu Dhabi saw the driver perform pretty well as he stared the round from 5th place on the grid and ended it at 3rd place on the podium. Last year, before heading for the last round, Button had already stamped
the 2009’s Championship, therefore, there was no stress on him. Conversely, at present he is out of the championship so he has nothing to lose at this race. Therefore, the 30-year-old said that he is going ahead just to have a fulfilled weekend at a great
venue.
On the other hand, the team’s ace, Lewis Hamilton stands at a very crucial stage in the battle. Although he is mathematically still in the tug for the title yet his 24 points’ disadvantage from the charts’ topper makes his chances very bleak.
As the driver enters the arena this season he has a very mixed sort of memories from last race. He had a brilliant qualifying last year which gave him the pole position, however, he was not able to finish the race and came out pointless.
This year he cannot afford anything less than a race win. Moreover, to grab the second title of his career, he needs Alonso to finish out of points while the other two top drivers, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel must finish off the podium.
Although, the 25-year-old has admitted that he only needs a ‘miracle’ to win the championship now but still he is adamant to call out this miracle.
“This year, it feels a little different - although I’m still mathematically in with a shout, I’m fully aware that, being 24 points behind, I’ll not only need to win the race on Sunday but see the championship leader finish outside the points. And, even then,
that might not be enough,” the driver proclaimed.
Despite being in a tough situation he said that this is not the first time in his career that he is going through such a stressful condition. Rather he believes that he is very well tamed for this kind of stress and pressure and hopes to deliver his best
on the track this weekend.
Moreover, the team principal Martin Whitmarsh also announced that the team has pretty high hopes from Hamilton and they are well aware of the fact that he is capable of doing wonders on the track.
The team boss further insisted that the most unexpected things can very frequently happen on the Formula One tracks. He is of the view that these things are not called miracles but they are part and parcel of the auto-racing world.
