McLaren look forward to run new Pirelli tyres in Montreal – Formula 1 news
McLaren sporting director, Sam Michael has said that they are looking forward to run new Pirelli tyres in the 2013 Canadian Grand Prix which is to be held at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal on June 9.
The Italian tyre company has planned to introduce their revised tyres in the approaching race and has allowed the teams to test them in the first two free practice sessions on Friday. Every team will get 2 sets of new tyres to test in order to make the necessary
changes in their strategy for the upcoming race.
Michael has said that it will be quite interesting to run the revised Pirelli compound tyres in this weekend’s race. Besides, he stated that they will get a good chance to understand the aerodynamic impact of the new tyres.
“It'll be interesting to run them,” Michael told a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes phone-in. “Teams will be checking things such as tyre wear, how the temperature profile across the tread changes, if at all, and obviously if there are any aerodynamic changes,
so we'll be using pressure tappings and rakes and things to look at how the flow changes.”
Furthermore, he said that the track of the next race will hopefully provide a good opportunity to test the new tyres and they are eying to come up stronger in Canada with some more updates in their car.
“You'd definitely be doing that in Montreal because the circuit isn't used much - it's like a street circuit and ramps up quite a lot. So I think we'll [fit the new tyre testing in] no problem at all,” he added.
At present, the Woking based squad are standing at 6th place in the constructors’ championship with 37 points. Besides, they are ahead of Toro Rosso and behind their main opponent, Force India.
It is to be noted that the British team has faced some huge technical and tyre management issues because of which both its drivers, Jenson Button and Sergio Perez have not been able to score competitive points with consistency. Let’s see how they perform
in the forthcoming race.
