McLaren looking forward to winning the United States Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
The managing director for McLaren, Jonathan Neale, has said that the team is aiming to win the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) this weekend.
Neale stated, “We are not taking an overtly cautious approach but I'd say we are going to be very diligent. We hope and our desire is to do really well here and win the race.”
The team is currently standing at third place on the constructors’ grid having lost their second position to Ferrari.
“Obviously we're very mindful of the constructors' championship and we are still taking performance upgrades to this circuit,” he added.
The team has been dealing with continuous reliability issues this season which became the cause of another failure at the Abu Dhabi GP. Their pace at Yas Marina had been really good. Hamilton and his teammate Jenson Button were able to dominate the practice
sessions and the qualifying round. Hamilton had the started the race from pole and was successfully leading until his car came to an abrupt stop in the twentieth lap forcing him to retire.
“The failure that we had in Abu Dhabi was very painful,” said Neale. “Having said that we've just done 1,500 trouble-free kilometres with the same car in the test last week.”
He is also very optimistic about the new purpose built track. He thinks it will be interesting to explore it during the first practice session on Friday which will also be enhanced by Pirelli’s decision to provide the teams with an extra set of tyres.
He was asked about which drivers might be successful in leading the race over the new track. He answered that he is expecting to see the top drivers at front once again. He is looking forward to a tough fight for the championship between Red Bull’s Sebastian
Vettel and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. He also predicted about exciting battles on the rest of the grid as well.
The United States GP is returning to the F1 calendar after a gap of five years which has got the teams and F1 fans very excited. The F1 community is hopeful that COTA will help make the event permanent.
