McLaren may struggle without Lewis Hamilton in 2013 – Formula 1
McLaren may face difficulties in 2013 without their driver, Lewis Hamilton who has decided to move to Mercedes in the next season.
Hamilton, after the Singapore Grand Prix, announced that he is going to join the Brackley based team in the coming year as Michael Schumacher’s replacement who has decided to take retirement at the end of this season.
On the other hand, the Woking based team declared that they have signed a new multi-year contract with Sauber driver, Sergio Perez who will drive as Jenson Button’s teammate from the next year onwards.
There have been a lot of rumours that Hamilton’s move to the Silver Arrows is money driven, however, their team principal, Ross Brawn has explained that the Briton is joining their team because he wants to take a new challenge in his career. Moreover, he
said that together they can take the team to new heights in the future.
On the other hand, McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh wished their driver all the best for his career ahead. However, he insisted that if anyone wants to win races, he should join their squad which has a tremendous legacy in the world of F1. Furthermore,
he said that they had tried everything to keep the 27-year-old in their team.
“I think Lewis is a top-flight driver and we didn't underestimate his attractiveness to others in Formula One,” he told the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes phone-in. “I think we knew that Lewis would be in demand and that's why we made him an offer.”
“The offer that we made was higher, I believe, than any other driver in Formula One is currently receiving or will receive next year. I think it was a good offer, but clearly we had to look at some alternatives because we recognised that there was a serious
threat,” he added.
Nonetheless, he asserted that they are not feeling upset and are confidently looking forward to perform well with their next year’s driver line-up which is competent enough of winning the world championship titles.
The British squad may struggle in the next season without the 2008 world champion but it will be interesting to see how the 22-year-old performs in the coming year.
