McLaren not ready to give up on championship yet – Formula 1 news
Team Principal for McLaren, Martin Whitmarsh, thinks that despite their tragic performance in the Korean Grand Prix last Sunday, they are not ready to give up and will keep putting in their best for the rest of the season.
During the Korean GP, driver Lewis Hamilton had to put up with bad luck as his car suffered from an anti-roll bar failure. He struggled throughout the race but did not give up and finished at tenth place. His hard-earned single point has been greatly appreciated
by his team.
Whitmarsh has stated that even though after this Sunday, their constructors’ championship chances have become bleak but they should take a leaf out of Hamilton’s book and not give up.
“We are going to be fighting the final four races. We can win those races and that is all we can try and do. In motor racing you have some good days and you have some bad days, but I cannot remember it going much worse than this one.” Whitmarsh said. “I
think this is a resilient team and we have to make sure that we arrive in India with these issues behind us, that these issues of reliability are solved and that we do everything we can to go out there and win those races.”
Before the Korean Grand Prix, McLaren had been in second place below the Red Bull Racing team but after having this particular tough day, they lost their position to team Ferrari. They are now at third place with a total of 284 points which makes a difference
of 83 points from Red Bull.
Hamilton himself thinks that they are out of the fight for the title and that it is very disappointing to have come down when they were so close. Although, he added, something like this is not uncommon in motor racing.
Whitmarsh has been immensely impressed by his driver’s determination in the face of all odds and he has advised his team to extract positive things out of this experience. Hamilton might be convinced about losing his own chance at the title but Whitmarsh
is not ready to give up on the constructors’ title yet.
