McLaren not underestimating Ferrari or any other contender in title chase – Formula 1 news
McLaren operations director Simon Roberts has said that they are not underestimating Ferrari or any other competitive contender in this year’s championship fight.
The Scarlet team struggled with the design of F2012 throughout the pre-season testing programme this year. Moreover, they expected to face difficulties in the first few races while their technical director, Pat Fry even ruled out the possibility of a podium
finish in the season opener.
Nevertheless, their driver, Fernando Alonso has successfully limited the damage for his team and has performed amazingly well in the season so far. In addition, they have made some substantial improvements so as to make their position stronger in the championship
battle.
Even though, Roberts said that they are not concerned with the progress of the Italian team or any other rival. However, he said that they have not taking anything for granted as all the teams are making best of the efforts to make the essential developments
and the significant preparations in order to claim the title.
“We’ve noticed that they have improved quite considerably. The car they started the season with was a bit of a handful. But we don’t worry about them anymore or any less than anybody else. There are four or five teams that on merit can easily win any of
the races. And as we’ve seen this year, it’s actually more wide open than that with other teams able to get it just right on the day. So we don’t underestimate Ferrari or any of the top teams. They know what they’re doing and are pushing as hard as we are,”
he said.
It will be important to mention that Roberts also said that they have found the solution for the problems which their driver, Jenson Button has been facing in the last four races with the setup of the car. He added that they are hopefully looking forward
to perform well in the upcoming races.
Nonetheless, it is very hard to make any kind of projections for the races ahead as there have been seven different winners in the first seven grands prix. Over and above, it will be interesting to see how the season makes progress for all the contenders.
