McLaren principal Martin Whitmarsh: Lewis Hamilton will be a force at Brazilian GP – Formula 1
McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh says that Lewis Hamilton is going to excel at the upcoming 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix.
Hamilton has admitted that this is one of the worst seasons of his career, as the Brit found himself amid controversies and plenty of criticism. The season’s lows are when he had multiple collisions and run-ins during races and qualifiers with the Ferrari
driver Felipe Massa.
Massa has been very vocal in his perception of the McLaren driver, but Hamilton chose to remain silent on the issue. During the season, Hamilton has been called on by the stewards on several occasions over his on-track behaviour and ignorance of caution
flags.
The former champion has also let in on the frustration he faced and stated that even he did not understand why he has been unable to perform to his potential.
Hamilton took a sigh of relief when he claimed a podium position at the qualifiers of the Korean Grand Prix. However, he finished second in the race behind the current season champion Sebastian Vettel.
He had a poor Indian Grand Prix because of a three-place grid penalty and finished seventh in the race, but he boosted his morale with a much-needed win at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Whitmarsh has praised Hamilton and says that the return of form will mean that he will be performing to his potential at Brazil.
“His win in Abu Dhabi was a great recovery from where he has been in the last few months, and he can do greater things than this,” said Whitmarsh. “There is no reason in my mind why he cannot now raise himself to another level.”“You could see in Abu Dhabi
he was pretty happy with his win there, which should enable him to drive with greater confidence and attack that little bit extra.”
It would be an interesting race, as Hamilton and his teammate Jenson Button are both at three wins apiece and although the latter will still be ahead in points and overall standing in the drivers’ championship, Hamilton would love to move ahead in the number
of wins as this would be the first time since his debut in Formula 1 that he will be behind his teammate in points.
