McLaren principal Martin Whitmarsh wants the team to win from the start of 2012 – Formula 1 news
McLaren Principal Martin Whitmarsh says McLaren need to win races from the start of the season in 2012 in order to be serious contenders of the drivers’ and constructors’ championship.
McLaren have had six wins in the season with the latest one coming when Lewis Hamilton won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Although it was all too late, as Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel had already secured the drivers’ championship three races prior to the
Abu Dhabi GP. Two races prior, Red Bull claimed the constructors’ championship as well.
Whitmarsh feels that the problem has been the slow start to the season. McLaren have made good strides with Hamilton coming back to form and winning the Abu Dhabi GP and with some tweaks to their car, it seems they are gearing up nicely for the 2012 season.
Whitmarsh’s remarks only further enhance their confidence in their ability and their recent strong showing.
“We're very proud of the performance at the weekend in Abu Dhabi to win that race,” Whitmarsh said. “That brings us to six victories, and obviously we'd like to make it seven (in Brazil) before the end of this year. But by the high standards of McLaren this
has not been a vintage year. We've secured second place in the constructors' championship, but clearly we want to win more races than this.”
“We had a slow start this year, so we have to get out of the blocks quickly and effectively at the start of next year to make sure we are winning races straightaway,” Whitmarsh explained.
He also praised the two McLaren drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, whom he said are two great drivers and with a very innovative team of men and women, he is confident that 2012 will be a season to excel for them.
Managing director Jonathan Neale also said that the team is doing well but is failing to win enough titles which is a frustration but that is where the work needs to be done, and McLaren is going to put that extra effort in to claim those titles in 2012.
