McLaren take blame for Jenson Button’s poor performance in 2012 Canadian GP – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has said that they are responsible for their driver, Jenson Button’s poor performance in 2012 Canadian Grand Prix held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal on June 10.
Button struggled with his car’s setup in the last race and he could only secure 16th place finish after setting off from 10th grid position. Nevertheless, Whitmarsh said that there is no doubt that the British driver possesses amazing racing skills but he
could not perform well only because they failed to provide him with a competitive car for the race.
“Jenson is a great racing driver, but we served him badly over the weekend,” he said. “His rear tyres were completely shot because we didn't long-run with his suspension set-up on Friday. That was our fault. We didn't give him a car he could perform in.”
He added, “Looking at what is happening with the rear tyres I think the car was excessively hard on them. It was killing the tyres. He is a super-smooth driver and we just didn't give him a car he could do it with. We have to get it right.”
On the other hand, Button’s teammate, Lewis Hamilton took a marvellous victory in the Canadian GP and became the seventh different winner in the season so far. Furthermore, the 2008 world champion is currently leading the drivers’ championship with 88 points
and he is 2 points ahead of the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari.
Meanwhile, Button is standing at 8th place in the drivers’ rankings with 45 points. In addition, he is ahead of Sergio Perez of Sauber-Ferrari and behind Romain Grosjean of Lotus.
Even though, he claimed an incredible victory in the season opener and secured second podium finish in the third race. However, he has been facing difficulties as he could only score 2 points in the last four grands prix.
Nonetheless, Whitmarsh said that they are ready to provide their driver everything which he may need in order to improve his performance in the upcoming races and expressed that he has the potential to become the first driver to repeat a win in the forthcoming
season.
