McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh praises Sergio Perez – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has praised the performance of Sauber driver, Sergio Perez in the 2012 Formula 1 season so far and has underplayed his struggles in the last three races.
Perez has been deemed as one of the most talented youngsters in the sport. Moreover, he has impressed everyone with his amazing performance in the current season until now and has secured a race seat in the Woking based team for the next season.
Even though, he has not been able to score even single point in the last three grands prix. Nevertheless, Whitmarsh has said that he has full faith in the Mexican driver and believes that he is learning well from his mistakes.
Furthermore, he said that the 22-year-old has got amazing talent and has done a wonderful job until now.
“He is a young and exciting driver,” he said. “Exciting can be good, it can be bad. But I think he did a fantastic job to be up there [eighth] in qualifying. He has the speed, and he wants to get up there and win. But if he hasn't got something to learn
at 22, there is something wrong.”
In addition, he said that he has not been with Perez for a long time but he knows that the youngster is very sharp and determined. Besides, he said that their next year’s driver line-up which includes Jenson Button and the Mexican is capable enough of winning
the world championship titles.
“I haven't spent much time with him, but [in] the time I have spent [I've found] he is very intelligent, and very ambitious,” he added. “If we can turn him into a World Champion he will lose some of that along the way.”
It will be important to mention that ex-F1 driver Niki Lauda has also admired Perez and has said that he has got the ability to achieve greatness in the future.
At present, the driver of the Hinwil based team is standing at 10th place in the drivers’ championship and is ahead of his teammate, Kamui Kobayashi.
